Over the past few months, the designer and WRITTEN Apparel founder Emily Carlson has been working on custom designs for Alisabeth Von Presley. This project is much different from the day job she knows and loves, and couldn’t possibly be further away from her famous pencil skirts…
This out of the ordinary project was creating custom costume designs for theatrical pop-rocker and creative photographer Alisabeth Von Presley.
Alisabeth Von Presley
She began her musical career at the tender age of 9 years old. She first performed at a local talent show – and ended up winning. But she rose to fame when she entered Season 12 of the popular musical contest, American Idol, where she notably impressed judges Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban, advancing all the way to the Hollywood Round.
Since her success on the hit show, AVP has continued to pursue a successful career in music. She regularly performs spectacular live shows across the US. Most recently, played a series of sold-out shows at the prestigious, Cabaret In The Courtyard at the historic Brucemore Mansion.
Alisabeth Von Presley wore WRITTEN’s custom designed costumes to her performance in the McGrath Amphitheatre at the Uptown Friday Night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to celebrate AVP’s latest album release.
The Duo
The two entrepreneurs formed a fabulous working and personal relationship from the start. This event marked the third year the dynamic duo teamed up for an extraordinary collaboration
These determined women work so well together because of the fact that Emily can’t get enough of Alisabeth’s bold, yet playful signature style. While Alisabeth loves Emily’s flamboyant and fun creations. This duo manages to create an extra wow factor for Alisabeth’s on-stage performances.
Naturally, for this special performance, killer costumes from WRITTEN were a must!
The Process
This year’s costumes were inspired by a wide mix of themes including school girl’s uniform, the circus, as well as outer space.
Emily’s process began with an inspiration board for each theme. She then added patterns, textures, powerful quotes, and any specific design details which sparked her imagination into her inspiration.
From there, Emily produced a number of sketches to capture her initial design ideas., allowing her developed and refined into beautiful costumes for AVP.
Some of the costumes were in fact, three separate pieces designed into one outfit. This allowed for Alisabeth Von Presley to remove certain pieces to instantly create entirely different looks.
When asked about the process Emily said,
“I really enjoy it because it allows me to think about design in a different way. I don’t have to worry so much about, will this sell or, is this practical enough. It’s my opportunity to design highly avant garde pieces and I don’t have to hold back. PLUS it’s a challenge almost in engineering. It forces me to think in a different way.”
Don’t worry though, Emily’s first love will always be the classic pencil skirt – she won’t be leaving for the costume world anytime soon!
